A daily walk-round check catches the obvious, visible defects, but it isn't a substitute for the periodic, more thorough safety inspection — sometimes called a preventive maintenance inspection, or PMI — that's meant to catch wear and developing faults a driver wouldn't spot on a routine walk-round. DVSA's Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness doesn't set one fixed interval for every operator; it expects the interval to be chosen deliberately, based on how the vehicle is actually used, and then genuinely adhered to.

What DVSA guidance actually says about intervals

Current guidance generally frames safety inspection frequency within a range — commonly discussed as somewhere between four and thirteen weeks depending on vehicle type, age, mileage and how it's used — rather than a single number every operator applies identically. Vehicles and trailers over a certain age are typically expected toward the shorter end of that range.
